New Indigenous Reconciliation Sports Program Aims to Boost High School Graduation Rates

MEND Canada (www.mendcanada.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering health, education, and reconciliation through sport, is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking initiative that uses athletics as a vehicle to promote positive character development and improve graduation rates among Indigenous youth.

MEND Canada partners with Capilano University, Skills Canada, Capilano Rugby Club, and Canadian Tire.

The program, delivered once per week in the community and integrated into the school curriculum, provides students with access to structured sport experiences that emphasize leadership, resiliency, teamwork, and respect. Rooted in Indigenous reconciliation, the program acknowledges community traditions by including ceremonial openings and closings led in partnership with local Elders.

Coaches for the program are recruited from Capilano University, ensuring students receive mentorship from post-secondary role models. Guest speakers from Skills Canada, Capilano University, the Capilano Rugby Club, and Canadian Tire will join sessions to inspire youth and connect them to pathways in education, employment, and sport.

“This initiative is about more than sport,” said Terry Sedgewick, CEO/Founder, MEND Canada. “It’s about creating opportunities for Indigenous youth to thrive academically, emotionally, and physically. By blending the power of athletics with community, culture, and mentorship, we aim to support more Indigenous students in reaching graduation and beyond.”

The program also reflects a deep commitment to reconciliation, ensuring that Indigenous voices, traditions, and cultural practices guide its foundation and delivery.

MEND Canada extends gratitude to its partners, participating schools, and Indigenous communities for their leadership and collaboration in shaping this program.
